A talented little artist

Katelyn has recently blossomed into quite the little artist. She is very good as seeing things and replicating them in a variety of mediums. We got her an Etch-a-Sketch for Christmas and you’d be amazed at the things she can draw on that thing. At school, she get’s requests for cartoon characters from all her classmates. During a family home evening she was just doodling away, and produced this:

Great job Kk!

Caribbean Cruise (Part 2)

Monday, February 13

After a rough night at sea, Monday’s weather forecast promised improvement. A little cooler than usual thanks to the cold front from the day before that had caused the winds, but in the Caribbean that means its 75° instead of 81°.

We got up early and packed for a beach day at Princess Cays, a private playground on the island of Eleuthera, Bahamas. With no dock, we had to be shuttled on smaller boats to the island. Once there, we carved out a spot, grabbed some beach chairs and enjoyed the sun for a while.

Manina and I left most our beach stuff back on the ship, but Greg and Emily brought along snorkeling gear. So, everyone took turns going out into the water swimming with the fish. I waited until after lunch, where I overheard someone saying to take out some food to feed the fish. So, I grabbed an extra banana and saved it in my pocket.

After lunch I went geocaching with Manina, Ben, and Greg. We walked off the Princess property about a half mile away in search of a cache (GC2NV7E). We were off the beaten path for sure, but as we got close to the cache, we noticed a guy putting something into a tree. He was a fellow geocacher and ended up spoiling the hide, but it wouldn’t have been too hard to find anyway. We signed the log, enjoyed the view, took a few pictures, and then headed back to our spot on the beach.

When we returned, I found it was my time to check out the snorkeling gear out with Greg. We quickly found out the fish loved the banana. I was swarmed by hundreds of fish every time I would smash the banana into little pieces in my hands. I easily could have caught several by hand. It was pretty fun.

When we swam back to our little cay, the girls were out floating in these cheap blow-up pools that we had purchased in Ft. Lauderdale for $5. I think it cost double that to rent them from Princess Cays for an hour, so definitely a good investment. We all spent an hour or so just floating, hanging out in the ocean, chatting about everything, and watching drunk people stumble over themselves on the beach.

We were having a great time on the beach, so we procrastinated our trip back to the boat as long as possible.

Like I said in our earlier post, dinner was a great time as usual, and Emily Francis planned for us all to go dancing later that night. Manina and I aren’t a dancing couple, but we went along and hung out for the evening.

Tuesday, February 14

Valentines Day was spent at sea as we cruised from Princess Cays to our next stop, St. Martin.

Manina and I got up early and went to Deck 15 Forward, the gym. They were just getting ready to start a yoga class when we got there, so we joined. The ship was still moving quite a bit, making some of the balance poses impossible, but it was still a good little workout.

While the rest of our group was doing zumba (dance/aerobics) and then a line-dancing/flash mob class, I thought it would be much more fun to play in the doubles table tennis tourney. We walked up right as they were getting started, and they needed just one more player so Manina was more than happy to step aside and let me play. The ping-pong table was in a strange corner of the ship, outside, and the winds just swirled. It made for some extremely crazy ping-pong shots that even the Taiwan national team hasn’t ever seen. My partner and I lost two straight matches, and it was over. It was pretty fun though (much better than zumba, for sure).

We didn’t have a whole lot else to do, so Manina and I found a couple lounge chairs and read while laying in the sun for much of the afternoon.

That night was a designated formal evening, so we had to get dressed up. Manina looked stunningly beautiful as we went to dinner. We ate, laughed way too much (again), and took several photos. Event planner Emily once again had plans for the evening, so we joined her for the Newlywed Game.

Tony and Emily were picked to play in the Newlywed game and now we know way too much about our next-door neighbors. We laughed and laughed, but were also quite flummoxed by some of the things we heard. I had to leave early to go reserve seats for some theater show, but later found out that they won the game.

Reserving the seats to the theater show was a bad idea. The show was beyond awful. So bad, in fact, that I won’t bother even discussing  it other than by saying this: I would have to be at sea for much more than a week to find myself enjoying cruise ship entertainment.

We played cards until late, but had a big day in St. Martin coming up.

Caribbean Cruise (Part 1)

I don’t really like reading or even hearing about other people’s travels — it just makes me jealous. When a post like this one comes up on someone else’s blog, I don’t even bother reading it. So, I can’t really be upset if you don’t read this one. However, I feel like I have to make a record so I can remember what a wonderful time we had.

First, let me explain that Manina and I hadn’t been on a real vacation for about 7 years. In 2005, we went to St. Lucia for a week for a wedding, but since then, we haven’t been able to get away for longer than a quick weekend. Sure, we’ve done cool things as a family, but just Manina and me? Nope. Not with six young kids.

So, when the stars aligned and Grandma volunteered to babysit (what a trooper!), we took the plunge and bought the tickets. We were going on a Caribbean cruise. Several other couples joined us: my Uncle Greg and Aunt Emily (who live in our neighborhood), our next door neighbors Tony and Emily, and neighborhood friends Ben and Marianne. It turned out to be a good mix.

We left early on Saturday, February 11 with Greg and Emily. We basically spent the day in airports and airplanes, from SLC to Houston, then Houston to Fort Lauderdale. We took pictures for the kids in most locations, hoping they’d sync up via the iCloud PhotoStream service. Unfortunately it required WiFi access, so our kids were mildly disappointed (the photos weren’t that great anyway).

Sunday, February 12

We couldn’t get on the boat until noon, so we looked for a church meeting to attend in the morning. The only nearby ward that met at 9am was a Spanish-speaking ward. We got a cab, got to the meetinghouse and sat through a meeting of which we didn’t understand a single word.

The best part was getting a ride home from Milson (not Milton, not Wilson, but Milson) and having him tell us about some miracles he’s seen in his life as a church member. In broken English, he told us about his construction cleaning company had been in a lot of trouble, but after some prayers and struggles found a niche that allowed him to thrive. He was obviously grateful for these blessings from heaven, and you could really feel his faith. A very cool guy.

We got on the ship at about 2pm, went straight up to the buffet, and then immediately got put through a safety drill. After that, it was up onto the top deck for the going away party. It was cool to see the giant ship navigate out of port and into the Atlantic Ocean. A cold front came in on Sunday morning, so the weather was cold (for Florida anyway) and windy. This made for a very interesting first few hours. We tried to play a round of mini-golf, but the ship was rocking way too much. Manina felt nervous and off (but not sick) from all the movement.

We met all of our friends for dinner that night after unpacking our stuff. Dinners turned out to be a great tradition. Our waiter Saravan from India took very good care of us, and we usually sat at the table and laughed for about 2 hours each night, ordering multiples of whatever the highlight was from the night (usually desserts).

After dinner we went to a quick show in the theater, followed by karaoke. Marianne signed all four girls to go up and sing “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” but not all the girls were having fun. Manina wasn’t happy at all to be volunteered. I wisely stayed far away from any involvement. So when their names were called, Manina reluctantly went up and sang with Aunt Emily. Let’s just say it wasn’t the highlight of the trip.

The best was yet to come.

The last bit of baby I had left

I have been promising Ellie a “big girl” bed for a while now, but I didn’t want to do it until she was finally potty trained. Now that she has overcome that obstacle we proceeded forward. I’ll be honest, I haven’t really wanted to switch her. I like believing she is still my baby. It has been really hard for me to make this transition since she is my last baby. I guess it is time. I have given up the last bit of baby I had in her. 😦

Seth’s sister loaned me this cute toddler bed (never tried one with my other kids but they are so tiny and cute!) and I got this cute Pottery Barn quilt/sham at a yard sale this summer and it turned out perfect in her room.

The first night was a bit of a challenge as she wasn’t very comfortable sleeping the bed. I had left her crib in there knowing that I may need to use it for a night or two until she made the adjustment. About three days in, she was good. Now she sleeps in her bed both at naps and at bedtime. She really seems to love the freedom she has. Now she can get up when she is ready rather than when someone is ready to get her out (not sure how much I like that!?).

The hardest part is deciding what to do with the crib. It was the same crib I used for all my kids and I am finding myself a little sentimental about it. I think I will store it away, not really sure just yet. No more cribs for me I guess…moving on to the next stage of life.

Bum cheeks for breakfast!

I woke up this morning to find Drew eating his cereal like this (You may need to click and enlarge the photo):

I got a good chuckle out of it. I asked him why he was eating breakfast in the nude. He looked at me like I was dumb and said, “When I went potty I got pee on my undies so I threw them in the washer.” Of course! Why else would he be eating breakfast nearly naked?!

I then proceeded to ask why he had a paper towel under his butt cheeks. He never game me a real answer, but I think it was because the seat was cold. I am just grateful he decided to use the paper towel, even if for nothing more than sanitation purposes!

For me, it is silly little occurrences like this that get me through the harder days of being a mom!

A Notice to Appear

I got a letter this week from the U.S. District Court in Salt Lake City. Turns out that I’ve been selected to serve as a juror.

I don’t know anything about the case, whether I’ll be empaneled, whether the judge will be impressed by my history as a lawyer or if he’ll also be concerned about the criminal activities of my alter ego in Pennsylvania. But whatever it is, I’m happy to do my civic duty. If I could get a book deal out of it, even better. Stay tuned…

What does January bring for you?

January brings lots of different things for people. For some it provides a new-found commitment to attend the gym regularly. Some set goals to play more with their kids. Some vow to eat healthy foods. For me, it brings a desire to de-junk! With a family of eight we quickly accumulate a lot of unnecessary stuff. And all those unnecessary items find strange places to be stored throughout my house.

As I began filling bags with treasures to take to DI for donation, I began organizing several areas in my home. I don’t like piles. I don’t like not knowing where things are when I need them. I hate sifting through things I don’t need to find things I do need. So, this month I have been de-junking and reorganizing.

For me personally it is a bit of a high. Some people get their high from drugs, some from exercising (I get that too), but as of late, it has been organizing that gives me that feeling of euphoria. I have also been trying to do it without spending and arm and a leg. Here are a few things I have been doing around my home:

I picked up these cubicles from Walmart for $12 each. I put them together and labeled each one with my kids’ name. I don’t know about you but I really dislike my child saying she needs her shin guards, socks and jersey one minute before we have to leave. I am hoping this will remedy the situation and they will know right where to go to get their stuff.

Here is another thing that drives me nuts…batteries! We have a million batteries rolling all around in our cupboard. I bought this drawer because it fit quite a few batteries in each drawer. We mostly just use AA and AAA batteries around here anyway. I also have a few tiny miscellaneous gadget batteries that I put in the little container at the top. We rarely use it so I will probably store it elsewhere.

My craft closet is always a mess. It is pretty much impossible to keep it clean with six kids rummaging through it on a regular basis, but I found this pants hanger idea on another blog and thought it might be a good idea to try with my ribbon. I haven’t really used it yet, but so far, so good. The hanger cost $4.

Lastly, my mudroom. It isn’t a large mudroom. It has large closet/cubbies that take up much of the space, but I am trying to utilize all the space I can. Here is where my life is run. It has all my notes, reminders, calendar, everything. With all the kids and activities we have going, there has to be some level of organization. I have been pretty good about storing their papers and such, but mostly in piles. I found this magazine rack on Amazon. In my opinion it was pretty spendy ($58), but we had an Amazon credit so I bought it. I couldn’t be happier. This gives ten separate pockets that I can label and best of all it doesn’t take up much space and just hangs on the wall. (*I printed out, labeled, laminated, and hole-punched each tag and hung them with zip ties.)

This is just my dry/erase board that I keep all my flyers and such on. We also keep our chore list there and my “life-saving” calendar as well. The real beauty is the rack next to it.

I am in love. Each kids has a slot for their homework/papers/junk. I also have a few extra for coupons, bills, phone directories and such.

I have also started on a few new projects. I am working on organizing all of my kids’ stuff into folder boxes. In addition I am making digital scrapbooks for each kid. I have been overwhelmed by this stuff for the past few years and then decided I would give it a try. I love Shutterfly and it has been awesome to work with. I am making each kid a scrapbook for birth to kindergarten, kindergarten to sixth grade, and seventh grade through high school. Thankfully I can work on these over time and not have to do them all at once. It is my goal to give each of them one for their birthdays this year (well, that is those that are old enough to fall into one of those three categories).

And finally I am excited to try this new book I found on a Artsy Fartsy Mama. I had Seth print it out and bind it for me at work. I am hoping this will help me with my weekly menus, shopping lists and I am going to attempt to make it work for budgeting too. I plan to keep track of my grocery budget there so I don’t overspend (which I normally do). I also have sticky notes all over my house. Ideally this will cut down on those as well. As hard as I have tried to use my iPhone to make notes and check lists, it just doesn’t work for me. I need to see them written out daily and put where I can see them. I prefer old-school on some things. 🙂

Seth thinks I am crazy. I told him if he gave me a little free time, I would work wonders! Ha. I personally think it drives him nuts, but man does it help things run a lot more smoothly for us. Of course by January of next year I will have to start over and come up with more ideas, but for now this is working great!

What have you been motivated to do this January?!

Poo Potty

Yep, that is what we are often hearing around our house, “poo potty mommy”. We have finally potty-trained our six and final child. I can’t say that I will miss potty training my kids, because honestly, I won’t. However, it is sure a great feeling to know I am doing it for the last time.

I normally have my kids potty-trained before they turn two, but with no kids coming up behind Ellie I felt less pressure to get it done. However, when Ellie started telling me before she went potty, I knew it was time. The first few days were tough. She was afraid of the toilet and would just cry and cry. She would even hold her pee for 10+ hours. However, after reading her a lot of books and singing her a lot of songs while she sat on the potty, she finally figured it out.

Now she is a pro! I don’t even have to remind her to go. Instead she comes running up to me and says “poo potty!” and we know it is time to head to the toilet. She is doing great and has had a dry pull-up (we wear those at night) for the past four nights. Way to go Ellie!

Drew turns 4!

Drew had his 4th birthday party yesterday. Anyone who knows little Drew knows he LOVES dinosaurs. They are the first toy he plays with when he wakes up and the last toy he plays with when he goes to bed. So it came as no surprise when he wanted a dinosaur birthday party. Thanks to my dear friend Jen, I had plenty of dinosaur decorations to use that made the day just perfect for Drew.

He woke up to a pterodactyl flying from our fan, dinosaur posters, and the basement was set up like a jungle full of dinosaurs. He was so excited. I know that kids don’t care too much about decorations and that parties are mostly for the parents, but I am telling you, he was thrilled. His face just beamed all day long. It made me shed a few happy tears several times that day.

He had some of his closest buddies over. We began by playing dinosaur tag. Then we made safari vests and went down to find dinosaur eggs. Afterward, we played “Pin the claw on the T-Rex” and played pop the dinosaur egg. We finished up with cupcakes and presents and then just let the crazy little dinos have some free play. Considering the party consisted of ten 2-5 year olds and the fact that they have an attention span of about 1 minute, it went really well.

We sure love our Drew Buddy (as he likes to be called). He is such a joy. Although he has a temper at times, he is mostly very kind and sweet. He has a huge imagination. He is very content having pretend play with his dinosaurs or his super heros. Today he asked if I could arrange for him to meet the “real” super heros in person. I’ll have to see what I can do. He is such a cute kid and often wins the heart of all those around him. I just can’t get enough of that boy. I love you Drew! You sure are getting big and whoa, look at those muscles! 🙂

Look at all those cute dinosaurs!

Sledding….brrrr!

The kids were dying to go sledding so we woke up early and headed out to beat the crowds to the hill. Upon arrival, the wind hit us like a frozen ice wall. It was SO cold. The kids were troopers and they weren’t about to let a little wind and cold stop them. Even little Ellie flew down the hill several times before heading to the car with me.

They all had a pretty good time, considering the freezing temperatures. It was so cold that two of our plastic sleds cracked in half when the kids hit a bump coming down the hill. Yikes! We’ll have to take them again when the wind isn’t a factor. Now off to slurp down some warm hot chocolate!
