Daddy Daughter Skate Date

Photo Dec 01, 2 16 59 PM

A couple weeks ago Katelyn and Megan got to take their dear old dad ice skating. It was arranged through their Activity Days program as the big annual activity, and they were both very excited when the day finally came. We got to go up to the Murray ice rink and skate for a couple hours.

The leaders brought hot chocolate and doughnuts, which was a nice diversion when we came off the ice. Megan and Katelyn quickly picked up from when we last went ice skating (Manina’s birthday a few years ago), but they spent a lot of time trying to copy a skater who looked to be on the ice training for the Olympics.

We had a lot of fun together. I sure am lucky to have such great girls!

2012 Christmas Card

Merry Christmas to all our family, friends, neighbors, and loved ones!

We love sending Christmas cards every year and find it’s a great way to reconnect with some of our favorite people. If you just stumbled onto this blog posting without receiving a card, well, we love you too.

One of the travesties of the Christmas card is that space is so limited. So this year, we decided to put in a QR code that links to this very post. If you’re arriving from that QR code, congratulations on being tech savvy. Feel free to browse around and learn more about what our family has been doing. (Again, if you arrived here by some other means, feel free to do the same – and maybe send us your name and address so you can get a Christmas card next year.)

Please visit our main page at https://mightyjohnsons.com as often as you would like to keep up-to-date with our family. The archives page is a great place to get all cyber-stalky, but please feel free to leave comments, or subscribe to our blog to get more frequent updates from the Mighty Johnsons.

Happy 3rd Birthday Ellie Belle!

My baby turned three today. Can you believe it?! I can’t. She is growing into quite a character. This girl oozes personality. Most days I can’t keep up with her. She can usually be found toting her purse and baby doll while walking over to play with her friends. When she is being particularly sneaky, you can find her cruising the neighborhood in her battery-operated jeep (now look back about 50 yards and you’ll likely see me chasing her in my PJ’s early in the morning…yep, that has happened more than once).

Ellie Belle is the perfect book-end to our family. She brings everyone such happiness. We have plenty of chaos in our crazy family, but it seems whenever she walks into the room everyone stops to give her the attention.

She loves baby dolls. I mean she REALLY loves baby dolls. It is uncommon to see her without a baby doll. She tells me regularly that I need to have another baby. For her birthday I got her and American Girl bitty baby in hopes it will suffice. Let’s hope so. Ellie is very independent. She doesn’t want help doing anything. I have given up organizing her closet since I know it will only be minutes before she is rummaging through it for a new outfit. Man, I love that girl!

To celebrate Ellie insisted on a princess party. I decided to put Megan and Katelyn in charge. They didn’t fail me. They delivered the invitations, filled the party bags, planned the games, and entertained the kids. It went perfectly! Ellie is fortunate to have such great sisters.

Happy 3rd birthday Ellie Belle!

Happy Birthday Katelyn!

Our sweet KK turned nine this week. Wow, how time does fly! I can tenderly remember the day she was born. What a sweetheart! Although she has changed and is growing up quickly, I notice that some things haven’t changed. She still lets me hold her, cuddle her and she begs for back rubs at all times of the day. She has an abundance of creativity and is always finding news ways to express herself (paint, clay, tinfoil, etc.).

Most importantly though, she is a kind, loving, and sweet person/daughter/sister/friend. I love you Katelyn Paige!

Halloween 2012

We had another fabulous Halloween with more candy than ever! The week began with the kids wanting to carve their pumpkins. I was cleaning a whole lot a gunk out of a whole lot of pumpkins. Then Megan and Katelyn began carving their own. Seth helped the little ones get their pumpkins carved to their liking. They did a great job!

Next came class parties galore! Everyone except Ellie and Jake had fun parties with their friends at school. After school we had our annual neighborhood trunk-or-treat where the littler kids were able to do a lot of trick-or-treating without having to walk a lot of distance. It was perfect for Drew and Ellie!

After the trunk-or-treat, we went over to the Wright’s house for the annual hotdog roast with our ward. We always appreciate not having to worry about dinner on Halloween. Following dinner, the kids broke into groups (some with adults and some not) and headed out. Jacob came home at nine with a pillow case nearly full to the top. He had over 300 pieces of candy. Megan and Katelyn weren’t far behind with 200+ pieces. Claire, Drew and Ellie were content with just hitting a few houses in our neighborhood and calling it good.

We were lucky enough to have Seth’s brother, David, and his wife and little girl join us for Halloween. We always love having them over for Halloween! Unfortunately, I didn’t get pictures of all the kids this year, but Ellie was a candy corn witch, Drew was Captain America for school and dracula for trick-or-treating, Katelyn was a vampire, Claire was a baby, Megan was an old lady and Jake was Robin. He only threw on the costume last minute to be able to go get some candy. Sadly, the older kids are getting less and less excited to dress-up. Seth and I did get in the spirit of Halloween earlier in the week for a neighborhood Halloween party. We were Bat Woman and Robin.

2012 Fall Tour de St. George

I’ve ridden a century (100 mile bike ride) every year since I started cycling. Last year, I did the Watchman 100 in the Fall and loved riding down in St. George. I briefly considered doing the same ride, but opted instead to do the Tour de St. George.

We’ve become good friends with the Denney family in our ward; I often ride with Brett, and Manina and Kristy (who is famous for yummy treat recipes) run together a couple times per week. Brett had never ridden a century and Manina and Kristy looked forward to running in warmer climes. We circled the day on our calendars and held way too many late-night planning sessions ironing out the details.

We drove down together, spent all day Friday shopping (I suspect the girls’ main intention for the trip). We stayed at the famed Fandel-Dinius homestead, where the accommodations are first class and the prices are very reasonable, even if a certain member of the staff is overly flatulent (Hi, Gary!).

It was cool on Saturday morning, but the first 15 miles were a long, steady climb up to Veyo so I was planning on warming up quickly. Right at 8AM I started out slowly, and Brett tried to latch on to a faster group, so we split up almost from the start. However, I ended up catching and passing him at the mile 30 aid station where he was refueling. So, I sat up and rode easy for a few miles, waiting for Brett to catch up. From there, we pretty much stayed together the rest of the way.

Brett also had to stop to tighten up his cleat, but that was our only mechanical issue on the day. We cruised back down into St. George to the mile 50 rest stop where the girls met up with us to see how we were doing. The girls need a little work on how to be an effective pit crew, but we were able to get more food and hand off some of our cool weather gear since the sun was out and St. George was warming up.

We had arrived with a pretty good sized group, but they left a few minutes before us (knocking my bike over in the process). Missing that group may have been our biggest mistake on the day, because the next 15 miles were tough. Brett and I stuck together, but we were on harsh chipseal roads out in the middle of nowhere on the road to the new airport. We caught one rider, then another one caught us and that really helped get us going again.

At the mile 75 stop I was refilling my water bottles, and I took some time to say thanks to the volunteer for spending her Saturday morning out helping out us cyclists. She replied, “Oh, I have my own selfish reasons for being here.”

She then quickly tried to backpedal, only making the situation worse. She tried to say that by volunteering she gets a free entry into the next race, and on and on. But, she kept on blushing and stuttering, and we weren’t about to let her off the hook that easy. It was a nice moment of levity amid the drudgery of the last miles of the ride, which can feel like they stretch on forever.

Brett got a second wind and started doing a lot of work to get our group of now three home to the finish line. There were several cruel climbs in the final miles, but we stuck together. We saw the leading group on one of the out-and-back sections and realized we weren’t too far behind, and were on track for a respectable finish.

We dropped down into downtown St. George where Manina and Kristy were waiting for us at the finish line. We finished tied chipped ride time of 05:32:30. Not bad for 100 miles. The gory details are on Strava.

Soccer is in Season

There is no other way to put it! Soccer was in full season around our house. We have several games every week. This year Drew, Megan and Jake are all playing. For the month of September and part of October we had at least three, sometimes more games a week.

This year was Drew’s first year. It proved to be a great experience for him. We realized how tough he can be when he wants something bad enough. If he said he was going to get a goal, he did (even if it meant knocking over everyone in his way). He was lucky enough to play with a couple of his good friends, Grace and Gwen (and bonus for me too since I got to visit with their parents each time). It was a great first season for Drew!

Team Picture!

Jake played soccer competitively a couple years back. After feeling overwhelmed by all the competition sports we have around here, we made him narrow it down too two sports. Soccer got dropped. After having a rough year of tackle football last year, he decided to try out a recreation soccer team this year. He really has enjoyed it. They only had one loss this season and that was a very close game. It has been fun to watch him really have fun doing something he loves. *Pics below are courtesy of our good friends, the Birds. Thanks Ivan!

Jake, #13

Megan has gone competitive. She plays for Plymouth FC and has a rigorous schedule. She played D1 this year and practiced twice a week and had at least one game every week. She is becoming a fantastic soccer player. Her speed is amazing! She play mid-defender and wins over 50% of the balls. I love watching her games. Unfortunately they didn’t have a winning season, but almost every game was close and I am predicting exciting things in the spring. Unfortunately I don’t have many photos of Megan playing. I was too busy screaming from the sidelines!

Goblin Valley

Several months back, Seth took the scouts to Goblin Valley. After hearing about how much fun they had, I decided to plan a trip there for our family. It didn’t disappoint. We had amazing time together, away, just us, having fun.

Friday morning the weather was looking pretty bad. By the time we got packed up and headed out, it looked even worse. The rain was pouring and the sun was long gone. We made it to Spanish Fork and decided to have one last, decent meal before we got out of town. It was still pouring! We had to park quite some distance from the entrance because we were pulling a trailer. By the time we got in to eat, we were pretty wet. I wanted to turn back and go home. Thankfully Cafe Rio was fabulous as always. We ran back to the car and of course got soaked all over again. And off we went to Goblin Valley.

Upon arrival, we were thrilled to see it wasn’t raining. It was obvious rain had been there, but it seemed to have moved on. It was pretty cold though so the trailer came in mighty handy (thank you to the Francis’ who let us borrow it). We cooked spaghetti and garlic bread for dinner. We had the heater going and the kids played cards. After dinner we made sure everyone was set up for bed. The tent would house four of us and the pop-up would house the other four. I am not sure what is about camping, but bed time is always hours earlier. I think we were all in bed, asleep by 9:30 pm.

Playing Cards

The next morning brought sunny blue skies. We were relieved. After a breakfast of hot chocolate and donuts, we packed up some snacks, the soccer ball, and headed over to Goblin Valley. We let the kids climb the rocks, kick the ball, play hide-and-seek, and lots of running around. We spent several hours there. It was such a unique place. I have never seen anything quite like it.

We came back to camp for lunch and then headed to Little Wild Horse Canyon for a hike through the slot canyon. It was a gorgeous hike. The only drawback was the water. Because of all the rain, we couldn’t hike very far into the canyon. Jake, Meg, KK and I trudged through water that was hip high before we decided it was time to turn around.

We came back to camp for burgers and Seth made a dutch oven peach-blueberry cobbler. Food always tastes SO good when you are camping! The rest of the night consisted of lots of card games, hikes around the hills by the camp, showers, stargazing and more. There was about an hour that Seth and I sat under the stars visiting (no TV, no cell, no interruptions). We could hear the kids playing in the tent and we realized how much we love moments like this. We then made a promise that we needed to do it a lot more often. *I am trying to convince him we need a trailer our own! 🙂

First Priesthood Session

Now that Jacob is a deacon, he can come along with Grandpa Mike and I to the Priesthood Session of General Conference. Since it was his first time, we decided to beg for tickets and try to go to the actually session instead of viewing the broadcast like we normally do.

Our bishop had two tickets, and we were able to scrounge a spare ticket from a friend’s father who is a stake president and had one spare.

We left a little later then we had planned, so we skipped a pre-game meal and hustled up to downtown SLC. We got a great parking spot, and were in line in plenty of time. After Grandpa Mike got his customary hassle from the security guards and ushers (he does look quite dangerous), we were able to get great seats center stage.

It was cool to be there when President Monson walked into the room, and it was good to hear all the great messages. Stopping for dinner after the session is never a good idea (it’s way too busy everywhere), so we had to settle for Wendy’s. We still had a great time though.

Wild Wild West

Our kids look forward to my employer’s annual Summer party like it’s going to Disneyland or Lagoon. The date is circled on the calendar as soon as I bring home the invitation from work, and for good reason—Morinda throws a great party.

This year the theme of the party was the wild, wild west. The kids did the usual activities: ceramic piggy banks, all-you-can-eat popcorn, sodas, and snow-cones, and all the bouncy castles and slides a kid can handle. To close out our night of fun Manina thought it would be a good idea to get a family portrait, Western style. A rough lookin’ bunch of outlaws.
