Toroweap Overlook

I promised them an adventure they would never forget. And, maybe for the first time, I delivered.

We were in Saint George for the long President’s Day weekend. I had wanted to go see the Grand Canyon at Toroweap Overlook, and everything was lining up nicely: the weather, the schedule, the preparations, everything was good. But, the night before several kids grumbled about having to go on one of dad’s crazy adventures in the desert. I told them that this might just be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and that they would never forget looking into the Grand Canyon.

Drew was really the only one excited to go when we woke up Sunday morning. And that was only because he wanted to find some geocaches out in the desert. I confess that in his recent bedtime stories I made geocaching sound much more exciting than it actually is. But, in my defense, I needed someone else on my side or we would just end up going to church and hanging around being bored all day. Eventually Drew and I won the day, and we set out around 9:30am.

We drove out to Hurricane and then to Colorado City, right on the border of Arizona. We turned onto the Clayhole Road and headed South, ready for 60 miles of bumpy dirt roads. About 50 miles of that we would be out of cell phone reception. But, we had come prepared. We brought along plenty of extra water, food, and warm jackets and clothing. Just in case.

We stopped every once in a while to bag a geocache, but it was mainly to break up the trip and give the kids a chance to run around outside. So, we didn’t break any landspeed records getting to Toroweap Overlook, but we had some fun adventures getting there.

At long last, we finally made it to Toroweap Overlook. The last mile was very slow going. I was worried about bottoming out in our Suburban and took it really slowly. That was until I saw an old lady taking this rough terrain in her Toyota Prius. Crazy.

We parked the car and walked around. It was nerve-wracking approaching the edge of the canyon, and even more so with our young children. We’re talking a 3000 ft sheer drop down the the Colorado River. It’s impossible to explain this canyon or appreciate it from a few pictures. It was awesome.

I found out later that Jacob and Manina actually had a discussion about the pros and cons of shoving me off the edge. I’m not sure which one of them was more anxious to have me die a horrible death, but I’m glad they didn’t have the guts to pull it off. Had I known what they were conspiring to do, I might have looked even more nervous in some of these pictures.

On the way back everybody was pretty wiped out. We were not looking forward to more of the bumpy roads, but were ready to get back to our home base and cook some dinner. We had a meal planned out waiting for us to cook upon our return.

On the drive back I made a fateful decision. I decided to take the scenic route. Instead of going back on the Clayhole Road which we’d driving in on I decided to take the County Road 109, which would give us a total of 2 fewer miles of dirt road. Plus, that was the road our GPS was telling me to go, so it couldn’t be that bad, right? Manina had nodded off, so she didn’t object to my decision. And off we went.

About an uneventful hour later Manina woke up and started checking her cell phone for service. Nothing. She’s with Verizon and I’m with AT&T so she checked my phone. Nothing. We were 3.7 miles from the 389 and I felt the back end of the Suburban starting to sway. I slowed down, knowing it was a tire problem. Then the dash beeped at me. CHECK LEFT REAR TIRE. I stopped. The dash beeped again CHECK RIGHT REAR TIRE. Oh no.

I got out and checked the tires. The left rear tire was flat. I walked around to the right tire. It looked low. I thought if I could quickly swap the left tire we might be able to get to the road or to civilization before the right tire went flat. I started to take off our spare tire but in the process I noticed the right rear tire was now completely flat. We were in trouble.

Often I deal with stress in an unhealthy way. I stood outside for a while and then started screaming at the sky, “TWO TIRES?! REALLY?! I CAN HANDLE ONE TIRE, BUT TWO? YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!”

My kids all laughed about it later.

I was walking through some scenarios in my mind. We could walk to the road, less than 4 miles away and get help. We could wait for a passing car and flag them down. Then, Manina’s phone had a single bar of service. I called 911 and told them of our dilemma. They dispatched an officer and called a towing company for us. We waited.

We got stuck at the purple pin.
We got stuck at the purple pin.

IMG_1028

The officer was the first to arrive. He told us this road was infamous for tire problems and we certainly weren’t the first. He said he’d been on a call not all that long ago to help a lady with one tire, and he ended up cutting two of his own and needed a tow out. Just rough country. Just bad luck getting two at the same time. Luckily, we had just made it into cell phone range.

Jake from Ramsay Towing came and towed us back to Kanab, Utah where he had a nice shop. He went about fixing our tires while Manina started telling the story via text message. I found this example:

Drew loved seeing Jake fix our tires and put them back on the Suburban. Drew even got to help run the machine. He had fun while we waited. Thankfully both tires were able to be patched and we were soon on our way, only $188 poorer. But, I was right, it was certainly an adventure we will never forget.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

We had yet another great day of LOVE around our house. Of course it started with all the girls insisting on some type of heart hairstyle. I pulled it off but not without a few tears from the girls after my first failed attempts.

IMG_1877

While the kids were at school I put together treat bags and “love” coupons with fun activities that each kid would like to redeem. They loved them and the best part is they didn’t cost me a penny! For dinner we made heart-shaped pizzas. They turned out great! We then played “Don’t eat cupid” for the remainder of the evening.

I know some people dislike Valentine’s Day due to the commercialism of it, but personally, I love any holiday that gives me one more excuse to show my family how much I love them. XOXOX

Bedroom Redo

As promised here is my “before and after” of my bedroom. From nearly the day we were married, Seth has always wanted to paint our bedroom blue. I was hesitant because I loved warmer tones, but I couldn’t be happier. I absolutely love our new color.

Seth and I painted it together and it turned out great. I don’t really have a “before” picture, but I did take a photo of our bedding a few months back so that will have to do. I sewed up the pillows that are on our new bed (with the help of my mother-in-law) and I am in search of some cute curtains and wall decor. Maybe I better get a job… 🙂

January Makeover Edition

Wow, has January been super crazy around our house! It started back in October when Seth and I decided (well mostly I decided) the house needed a new paint job. The main living quarters hasn’t been painted since the day it was built and the walls and ceiling matched each other with a lovely mauve beige color (the color of fry sauce might be a better description). After getting several bids, we settled on Mario from A-1 Fine Line Painting.

Little did I know, that finding the painter was the easy part. I spent weeks and weeks and lots of money in search of the perfect color for our home. Our house looked like a war zone with different patches of paint throughout. After nearly giving up, I called a gal in our ward that is an interior designer and asked her for some suggestions. I was leaning toward a gray, but all the grays I tried seemed really cold and dark. I wasn’t a fan. She turned me on to a Sherwin William’s color, “Amazing Gray”.

Initially, I didn’t love it. The sample on my wall looked a bit green. I still felt frustrated and uneasy about using it, but I knew my painter was coming in one day so I had to make a decision. My dear friends Emily and Jenni came over and helped me decide. We also went and viewed “Amazing Gray” in another home and decided that was the best option. It was gray, but a warmer gray. I didn’t want to use any browns as I was heading away from those tones in my house. So “Amazing Gray” it was. The next day Mario arrived and we were banned to the basement for three straight days!

Mario did a fabulous job (and I highly recommend him if you are looking for an affordable, quality job). It took a day or two to adjust to the new color but I liked it. I was especially happy to have my dark brown accent wall gone and I loved my ceilings painted white. Paint done, now it was time for a little matching decor. Nearly everything I had on my walls and shelves was outdated and needed to go.

The hardest part was I had already spent most of my budget on paint, a new dining table and a hutch. With the help of Emily and her cousin (Candice), we scoured every store in search of things I loved. All my life I have had things in my house that were given to me. Very few things had I bought just because I loved them. Candice, who does interior design work on the side, viewed all my bookmarks of things I liked as well as all of my Houzz.com favorites and decided I was leaning more toward Shabby Chic. I didn’t want to be locked into anything but that gave us something to go on. I repainted my benches and a few other items that I liked and sought out to find other items for an affordable price.

In the end, I think we did a great job. Of course I would love to re-stain my floors and cabinets but I just don’t have the budget right now. Eventually that will come. I would also like to redo my bar in wide white bead board, but I will let Seth tackle that when he gets some free time. I quickly realized that once you start fixing up one room, you want to keep going. I have since repainted my front room and my bedroom, but those posts will come soon. Anyway, I am happy to say that I love my home. I finally feel like it is mine…maybe not perfect, but it is getting there! 🙂

Happy 5th Birthday Drew!

Our little Drew turned five on Sunday! Seriously, five? Wow! Unfortunately for him, his birthday fell on a Sunday so no Chuck-E-Cheese or Jump-on-it as he was hoping. However, he was lucky enough be able to celebrate with his Grandpa Mike who was turning 65! Before heading up to their home, we did have a small celebration at our house. Megan made brownies for Drew and he got to open his presents. He was screaming with excitement as he opened each present.

Spiderman web slinger! Yes! (That’s what he said.)

He was equally excited when he opened the skateboard that G’ma Ria got him. Although I don’t have pics, he also got a new 16 inch bike and a basketball hoop for his bedroom door. I think we could have gotten him anything and he would have loved it. He couldn’t wipe the smile off his face all day long!

On Monday he was able to celebrate his birthday with his Bear Hollow Preschool class! He got to be the leader and he was also able to bring home Little Bear for the night.

IMG_1767

Of course, every five-year-old year birthday brings along the big “kindergarten checkup.” All reports came back great. He can see and hear perfectly and his coordination is great. He is a little shorter and skinnier than average, but that wasn’t entirely surprising. He promised Dr. Wise he would continue to eat his veggies and at least try all the foods his mom makes (yeah right!). The not-so fun part was the three shots that followed this picture. He was a champ though and only shed one small tear.

Next stop, kindergarten! Love you Drewbie!

2012 Year in Review

Happy New Year!

We’ve had a fantastic 2012 here at the Mighty Johnson household. In case you’ve missed any of our adventures, here are some of our favorites memories of 2012. This has become quite the tradition, having done this same thing every year on this blog (see 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008 entries).

January: Drew had a super-fun birthday party

February: Perfect time for a Caribbean Cruise

March: Jacob advancing well in Boy Scouts

April: Easter in St. George was a lot of fun

May: The weather was good enough to start camping

June: Manina ran a half-marathon

July: We visited our friend Chantel for a vacation to remember

August: Manina wrecked our nearly-new Suburban

September: We were a week or two early for the leaves up at Silver Lake

October: We went to Goblin Valley as a family

November: Birthdays for KK and Ellie

December: Always busy with Christmas festivities

Here is to hoping that 2013 brings as many fun memories as the last 365 days!

Merry Christmas 2012

IMG_3809

Merry Christmas from the Johnson Family! We had a wonderful holiday season. As usual we spent Christmas Eve at Seth’s parents house eating, playing the candy bar game, and reenacting the Nativity scene. It is one of those traditions the kids talk about weeks before and weeks after.

IMG_1661

IMG_8424

After leaving Mom and Dad’s house, we came home to continue some of our own traditions. Each kid opened a new pair of pajamas and then Jake led us (with his guitar) in singing a few Christmas carols. Next we had sparkling apple cider and Seth read “Twas the Night Before Christmas” to the kiddos before tucking them into bed.

Santa’s work had been done while the kids were snuggled in their beds. In the morning everyone woke up (about 7:00) excited to see what Santa had brought. It was a fabulous Christmas. It seemed everyone was super happy with their gifts and we never felt the “after Christmas pit in our stomach” that so often follows opening way too many gifts.

We hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas. We are so thankful for this holiday season and the time to celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ!

Christmas Festivites

The month of December flew by especially fast this year. I was well ahead of the game in November, but come December it seems everything was a blur. We were able to fit in a few extra things in addition to the Christmas parties and performances. I will let the pictures do most of the talking on this post.

We went down to Riverwoods Mall and visited Santa. Ellie was a little hesitant, but warmed up to him after realizing he would give her a candy cane.

Claire had her first grade gingerbread play. I am not sure I have ever seen anyone so excited for something as was she! Afterward she came up to me and said, “Boy mom, I almost got stage fright when it became my turn to speak.” What a cutie!

IMG_1503

Drew had a Christmas performance for this preschool class at the University Mall. Needless to say, he got really nervous in front of all the people. Look closely. Yep, he was bawling! No, he wasn’t lightly sobbing, but rather he was hysterical. He is the one with his hands on his cheeks. I am happy to report that halfway through the songs, he got it together and sang with some enthusiasm. Of course he was thrilled to visit with Santa afterward.

IMG_1598

Of course Christmas wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Temple Square to see the Christmas lights. We met Spencer, Rachel and their kiddos as well as Lisa and Ava for dinner at the food court at City Creek Mall. After eating we bundled up (it was super cold outside) and headed out to see the lights. It was awesome as usual.

Target Practice

A couple weeks ago Grandpa Mike invited us to go out shooting in the west desert. It seems like we haven’t been able to go the last few times, but mainly because our invites have been something like this:

I’m going shooting. I’m already in Lehi. Love to have you come along. Can you join me 20 minutes ago?

So, when we got more than an hour’s notice this time, Drew, Jacob and I tried to get everything together and meet him out along the road to Faust (aka the middle of nowhere). By the time we got out there and met up with Grandpa and his friend, they had already destroyed more than a few soda cans.

Jacob got coached up by Grandpa using a .22, a .223 and also a 9MM.

Even Drew got to shoot a couple cool pellet guns, but I was too busy assisting to take photos. We had a great time. I’m glad my kids have a healthy respect for firearms, and are able to receive expert training from Grandpa.
