Super soup

Domestic probably isn’t the first word that comes to mind when describing one of my many, many qualities. As it turns out, you may need to add it to that lengthy list (right next to humble). I’m becoming quite the chef.

My specialty is a killer homemade chicken noodle soup. I’ve only prepared it twice, but it has been a big hit around our place, which is saying something. Usually we have at least one or two dissenting opinions, but not with my chicken noodle soup. It’s a unanimous winner. Continue reading “Super soup”

To give, or not to give

Last Sunday I got a call from a young man doing and Eagle Scout project and he wanted me to donate blood. I am now on a list of regular donors to the Red Cross (Yeah, I am pretty proud of that!) Seth was gonna be working from home that afternoon so I didn’t really think twice about saying ‘yes.’ When Tuesday came along I went to Thanksgiving Point and donated blood. I wasn’t nervous or uneasy. I just did it. Continue reading “To give, or not to give”

New hair, new hat

This weekend Meg got a haircut. She waited so long for it to grow out and then out of the blue, she decided she wanted it short again. Initially I was a little disappointed that she wanted to chop it all off but then Seth reminded me how much easier it would to get her ready in the morning. She cut off about 4 inches so it is a pretty drastic change. It turned out very cute and she loves her new look.

While at the salon Katelyn played dress-up with a huge pile of hats and flowers. By the time we were ready to leave she had convinced me to buy her this hat and flower (see below). It is such a trend, but I couldn’t deny how very cute she looked. She is such a poser. I love little girls!! Continue reading “New hair, new hat”

Happy 1st Birthday Drew!

Drew turned 1 today. It is hard to believe a whole year has passed since his birth. He is the most calm, easy-going baby. We are so grateful to have him in our family.

We didn’t do much to celebrate and didn’t have too many visitors (thanks to the mounds of snow we are getting) but we had fun anyway. Drew wasn’t in love with the idea of eating cake or getting messy but after a few bites he started to enjoy himself. That is until he was so covered in chocolate that he couldn’t see out his eyes and then he began to cry, making it even worse (see the stages below). Continue reading “Happy 1st Birthday Drew!”

A family of penguins

Seth’s brother, Jesse, sculpted us a family of seven penguins, each representing our roles, interests, etc. He did such a great job that we wanted to share them on our blog. He made them out of clay, cooked them, and then painted them. He just recently started doing this and we were so pleased. They are the cutest little penguins. The kids LOVE to show their friends the penguins and especially how each one represents them. You can probably tell from the picture which one is which but you’ll notice the details more if I point them out.

From left to right:

  • Seth: wearing a cycling helmet
  • Manina: wearing an apron (I guess I should start cooking)
  • Jacob: Wearing a BYU cap and holding a football
  • Megan: carrying her school books wearing earrings and a necklace
  • Katelyn: carrying a teddy bear and wearing earrings and a bracelet
  • Claire: wearing her purple swimsuit (For those of you that don’t know, this is the exact swimsuit she leaves at Grandma Jan’s house to wear in her hot tub. She puts in on the second she gets there and wears it until I force her to change.)
  • Drew: sucking his finger and wearing an army cap (he army crawls all over the house)

Thanks Jess! We love the penguins. If anyone is interested in having Jesse sculpt something feel free to drop him an email. I am sure he would be willing to do it for the right price. πŸ™‚

Best of 2008

MightyJohnsons.com is now a year old, and in the honor of the god Janus (for whom January is named) we’ll take a look back at 2008 before looking ahead to the new year.

So, here are some of our favorite posts from 2008. What a year!

January: Drew’s arrival trumps everything else. Five kids. Wow.

February: We’re a family of freaks, and this post highlighting all our bizarre talents proves it.

March: A busy month. I survived in a snowcave, Drew got blessed, and the kids made a huge mess for FHE.

April: Started the month with a classic April Fools’ joke which scared more than one or two of you; Jacob shows off his dancing skills.

May: We made several all-time stupid decisions which were both very stressful and expensive.

June: Manina won a washer and dryer set.

July: Jacob gets baptized. Claire goes to the hospital.

August: Summer wraps up with a fun golf outing and Seth conquering Suncrest.

September: We took a fun trip to St. George where Seth hiked the narrows and Manina went to Les Mis.

October: We love the fall leaves in the mountains and Halloween.

November: Megan has been losing teeth this year.

December: Manina has been losing money this year.

Hope you enjoyed 2008 as much as we did! To view more posts from 2008, be sure to visit the archives page, or you can also use the handy little search box too!

A New Year, a few new goals

Some years I make resolutions, some years I don’t. This year however we had a great talk at church about setting goals, whether it be the New Year or not, and accomplishing them. He mentioned expecting some disappointment and being prepared for things to not go as expected. So this year I have set some really attainable goals and some maybe “not so easily” attainable goals and hopefully by the end of the year I will have had some success.

Here are my goals: Continue reading “A New Year, a few new goals”

Best Christmas Ever

We had a wonderful Christmas this year! It was filled with lots of snow, family time, and great traditions. We tried to be a little more conservative this year and it seemed to work out better than ever. The kids still got plenty of fun presents but weren’t so overwhelmed with gifts that they weren’t able to really enjoy the items they received. Continue reading “Best Christmas Ever”

A new tradition

I think we have found a new holiday tradition. We always try to make our way up to Salt Lake to visit Temple Square and see the beautiful lights, but this year we went up early enough to go to the Church History Museum. Seth’s Mom is serving a mini-mission as a docent at the museum for the next three years. Twice a week she works there giving tours and providing answers to questions about the exhibits.

So today we had our very own personal tour guide. She is fabulous of course and knows so much about church history. She led the kids through some of theΒ  more exciting displays and told interesting stories along the way. She kept the kids attention the entire time (not to mention Seth and I were listening very intently as well). I would highly recommend going to visit when she can be there to take you on a tour. We also went to the children’s area and took a few photos. Then we concluded with a story about the pioneer children and the types of toys they got in their stockings at Christmas time. The kids got to make their own humming saw and have molasses cookies too! Continue reading “A new tradition”
