That’s what I get for trying

So following along with my New Year’s resolutions, I have been reading some books on healthy cooking. The past few weeks I have tried to cut out a lot of the enriched flour, saturated fats and simple sugars and implement some of the healthier foods into my life as well as my children’s lives. Some things have gone over really well. They don’t seem to mind whole wheat tortillas, whole wheat noodles, organic peanut butter or skim milk. They even like the flax and soy protein shakes, but I guess I crossed the line when I added tofu to our meal last night.

We had tofu stir fry. The kids just stared in amazement. “What are these white rubbery chunks Mom?” I explained it was tofu and then they insisted on knowing what animal it was from. After explaining its origin they seemed even more confused than before. I told them they had to try it but if they didn’t like it then they didn’t have to eat it. Needless to say Jacob spit it across the room and we all laughed. He was so upset he flipped his plate upside down making a big mess. Claire was on the opposite end of the table spewing it all back on to her plate saying “I don’t like it. It is disgusting.” Meg and KK ate it but would prefer they not eat it again. Truly it doesn’t taste bad. It really doesn’t have any taste at all, but the texture is kind of gross. I am not sure I am a big fan myself.

I have been having fun trying new recipes and using new vegetables, spices and oils that I have never tried before. My kids have been really good sports too, until last night. I don’t think I’ll try tofu again (unless I can sneak it in a smoothie or something). Meg summed up the week last night by saying, “Mom, do you think it would be alright it we had plain cheesy noodles tomorrow?” So I guess I’ll compromise and let them have something of their choice tonight.

See the pics below. Jacob is going under the table in an attempt to show his complete disgust of my meal. The other one is Jacob’s plate after he tried tofu and the last one is Claire putting her meal back on her plate from her mouth. Lovely.

  1. That is too funny. I couldn’t help but laugh because about a year ago, Caleb made tofu stir-fry for me and wanted me to try it. I was just like the children, I do not care to ever have it again!!! hahah, yep, I’d rather have real meat from an animal as well.
However, I am proud of you for making more healthy meals.

    Love, Suzy

  2. Hmmm… Well… I won’t comment on the responses but will say that because tofu is generally neutral in flavor, it has the innate ability to draw flavor from whatever else you prepare with it. I learned, over time, to: 1)use extra firm for most applications; 2)spice strongly according to my own bold preferences; 3)in a large bowl, mix with sesame oil or marinade, or even use BBQ sauce! I’ve cut it into large slices like “Spam” and used worsteshire and BBQ sauces for bol dness and fried it–it makes great sandwiches. But it is understandable that it is not too appealing when just tossed into a dish. Creativity really helps… πŸ™‚
