Our beloved BYU Cougars finished as regular season champions for the second year in a row and were ranked #24 in the country heading into the Mountain West Conference tournament. The tournament is in Las Vegas, so we figured it would be a short drive from Manina’s dad’s home in St. George.
We decided to invite my family down for the road trip. The boys were excited to go see the game on Saturday (if BYU made it to the championship) and the girls were more than happy to enjoy the nice weather and go shopping.
Grandpa Mike, uncle Jesse, Jacob, and I drove down Saturday afternoon to Las Vegas to see top-seeded BYU play UNLV in the championship game. UNLV was the second seeded team in the conference so it figured to be a great game.
BYU started out strong and was ahead at halftime. In the second half, UNLV took over the lead with some hot shooting by one of their guards. BYU fought to stay in the game, but just couldn’t keep up with UNLV’s momentum. UNLV ended up winning by more than 10, but it was close until about 2 minutes left in the game.
Despite the loss, BYU is a lock for an NCAA tournament bid; hopefully they’ll pull a 7 seed. BYU hasn’t played well in the big dance over the last several years, but we’re hoping this is the year they can buck the trend and at least make it into the sweet 16. Go Cougars!
